After All-Wheel Drive, Wireless CarPlay Is 2026’s #2 Must-Have Car Feature
Every year, automotive research firm AutoPacific surveys tens of thousands of car shoppers about what they actually want in their next vehicle — and for 2026, the results say something worth paying attention to if you’re driving an older car without built-in smartphone connectivity.

The Data
AutoPacific’s fifth annual Future Vehicle Planner surveyed more than 19,000 licensed drivers in the US who intend to buy a new vehicle within the next three years, testing demand across more than 160 vehicle features. Since 2025, the study has measured something more specific than simple popularity: how many people consider a feature an absolute must-have, versus merely nice to have.
Among features people already want, two stood out as considered essential by the largest share of buyers:
- All-wheel drive — considered a must-have by 41% of buyers who want it
- Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto — considered a must-have by 37% of buyers who want it
For context, that puts wireless smartphone connectivity ahead of other frequently-requested features like a power front passenger seat (36%) and blind spot cameras (33%) in terms of how non-negotiable it’s become to the people who want it.
Why This Distinction Actually Matters
AutoPacific’s own framing of this data point is important: this isn’t simply “the most popular feature.” All-wheel drive, for instance, only appeared among the top 15 most-wanted features overall for about 39% of all respondents — but among the people who specifically want it, the vast majority treat it as a dealbreaker, not a bonus. Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto follows a nearly identical pattern.
That distinction is exactly why automakers use this kind of data to decide what belongs standard on every trim versus what stays confined to an optional package — and it’s a strong signal that wireless smartphone connectivity has crossed the line from convenience feature to baseline expectation.
What This Actually Means If You’re Not Shopping for a New Car
Here’s the part that matters if you’re not in the market for a brand-new vehicle: this data reflects what new-car buyers expect walking onto a dealer lot in 2026 — it doesn’t reflect what most cars already on the road actually have. Millions of Toyota, Lexus, and other vehicles built even a decade ago were designed years before wireless CarPlay existed as a category at all, let alone as an expected baseline feature.
That gap is worth sitting with for a second. If nearly 4 in 10 must-have-feature buyers now treat wireless CarPlay as essential as all-wheel drive, driving a perfectly good older car that simply predates the feature isn’t really a “settle for less” situation — it’s a solvable gap, not a permanent limitation of the vehicle.
Closing the Gap Without Buying a New Car
This is exactly the gap AUVETO’s Smart Integration Kits are built to close for Toyota and Lexus owners. Rather than treating the absence of wireless CarPlay as a reason to shop for something newer, a properly matched integration kit adds it directly to your existing factory screen — closing the distance between what 2026 buyers expect as standard and what your current vehicle can actually do, without the cost of a new car.
